30|REPORTAJE Juan Pablo Serrano. Viñedo De Cote. Diseño de iluminación de Luis Lozoya. the public arena. We use it to shine a light on what is interesting to us, what worries us, what we hate and also what inspires us. To be honest, we are not very interested in these type of celebrations and homages to the greater glory of some and to increase the wealth and showcase others; big expenses, few results in the long run. Will we participate in an event to celebrate the IYL2015? Not on purpose, but I am sure that someone will make us a proposal and to be sure, it will be very interesting because we can let our creativity run free with a decent budget. We would not say no, but we will try to subvert it. Adrián Muros, professor of the Architecture School of Barcelona (“Escuela de Arquitectura de Barcelona”). Light is the most moldable material that we know, its strength and power reside in its existence-nonexistence. It is part of the matter that I use to construct my buildings. It is hard as steel and light as a breeze of air. It is so flexible that it supports all possible attributes, but most times we cannot find words to describe the emotions that it elicits in us. I hope light will give us a better understanding of space, architecture, art, and everything that surrounds us. I hope that those of us that work with light be more critical with its use; with light, everything does not go. I wish that all the people that are influenced by light, understand it and value it more. As professor of the Architecture School of Barcelona, I will be present at the LLUM BCM 2015 with one of the planned installations. I have also organized the first international contest of photography in artificial light for students of architecture, design and art of Europe and programed new specialization and Masters Courses with important lighting content. Professionally, I have several projects underway: some product designing, continuing to write articles, traveling and getting to know other points de view, preparing a photography exposition and getting started on a new book. Miquel Àngel Julià, architect Le Corbusier use to say: “Architecture is the play, wise, correct and magnificent of volumes under light”, which is to say that architecture would not exist without light. If objects are not illuminated by light they do not exist; space, objects, exist when we see them and not sooner. Still, laying in the night looking at the sky, we see stars that are long gone. Light is a mystery, it is an “intangible material” of projection, as are stones or wood. The fact that the ONU declared 2015 the “International Year of Light and Technologies based in Light” is all very good but I hope that its goals go farther than mere technology and we can talk more about “Light Culture”. We need to talk about lighting but we have a greater need to talk about light; when you talk about light you talk about shadow because one cannot exist without the other. They say New Year, new life. My wishes for 2015 started to get fulfilled the previous year. Starting this year our creative team will start working for a new brand in pursuit of new challenges. Among other projects we have the design of a system of new luminaries thought specifically for the hotel industry and we are planning to participate in another workshop related to light. The best way to “make culture” is communication. This is the reason I will continue contributing as speaker and moderator of round tables on Retail, Hospitality, Workplace, such as the ones organized by the “Clúster de Iluminación CICAT” (Cluster of Lighting CICAT). In our group we have students from ETSAB and ELISAVA, which I am sure will participate in the I International Contest of photography in artificial lighting organized by UPC,ETSAB and iCandela. 2015 will be a great and luminous year. For sure! Juan Pablo Serrano, architect For me light is the contact with the universe and in architecture it has the enormous capacity of making things appear and disappear. In 2015, international year of light, I would like to see evaluations on how to use it more efficiently. Furthermore, use the event to achieve a correct energy saving lighting with the controls that will allow a more efficient global use. It is not something I have planned, but I believe this is a good opportunity for the Ibero- American University, to have guest speakers specialized in lighting, in my courses, so my students and the community of the university can learn about the importance of the whole topic of lighting such as design, proposals, use and controls. Jan Blieske, lighting designer If you close your eyes it is totally black.
