48|PROTAGONISTA we, in France, do not have a true education in lighting design like so many countries do. There is also the issue of professional recognition in these times of “crisis”. Let us be real, how many lighting projects are done without a lighting designer? The answer is: The great majority! Many cities are changing their lighting Management Plan. Is LED the solution in any space and in every place in the world? Ironically speaking, if you are listening to the marketing services of the manufacturers of lamps the answer is yes. I see things differently and for me the first thing we have to change is the mindset and the habits; technology is only a part of the whole field of action. 2015 will be the International Year of Light (IYL). Do you think humanity will become conscious of the importance of light in our life and in the planet’s life? I believe it will, we have to be optimistic! Let us not forget that this International Year of Light has the subtitle “and technologies based on light”. We owe this initiative to the scientific world and I think that we truly have to make evident the “living conditions” aspect. It is the lighting designers who should work with the scientists so the importance of the good “daily” use of light in our life would be recognized. One of the initiatives of the IYL, called Study after Sunset, promotes the access to light for everybody after the sun sets, with the use of LED luminaries autonomous in energy, for example. To me, that is where the true revolution of the LEDs at the global level lays and not on the substitution of discharge lamps on streetlights. In France, is it necessary to educate the public on the culture of light or is it widespread already? We are not starting from scratch and it is a country where you can make a living as an independent lighting designer but there is no doubt that the culture of light should be spread. I am going to be radical and say that it should start right now with light but even before with architecture.
