56|A FONDO Starlight Reserves in Chile: artificial lighting reconciles the protection of natural environments The Office for the Protection of Northern Skies of Chile, OPCC, an entity formed to protect the nor- thern night sky of the country, which is also the Latin American Starlight Initiative Focal Point, has been striving to achieve the first certification of a Starlight Reserve in the continent. This is the Fray Jorge National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Coquimbo Region, in northern Chile. This park has very dark nights and little light sources in their immediate surroundings, so that actions to control emissions of internal lighting and the nearby towns are relatively bounded.
