With 16.7 million tonnes, the consumption of cement fell 14.5% until August, compared with the same period of the previous year, according to the Spain (Oficemen) cement manufacturers Association said in a statement. If we take as reference figures for the month of August, with two million tonnes, the fall in consumption stands at 10%. While this decline is somewhat more moderate than in previous months, it is early yet to assess the impact of the cut in public works investments will have on the demand for cement.
Spanish integrated cement plants have occurred in the first eight months of the year 17.6 million tonnes, representing a decrease of 11.75% compared to what they produce in the same period in 2009. For its part, sales in the domestic market have been reduced by 15% over last year, 16.2 million tonnes.
This decrease in activity has offset with an export rate. Thus to last Spanish industry has sold out of the domestic market 2.6 million tonnes, representing an increase of 31% compared to the same period of 2009. For its part, imports decrease 19% and stands at 1.5 million tonnes.
