EMC, example of sustainable building steel
December 16, 2008
In the project Eurobuild + ' Dissemination of Eurobuild in steel' involved the following partners: ArcelorMittal (Luxembourg), Steel Construction Institute (UK), University of Dortmund (Germany), Institute for construction in Sweden steel, CTICM (France), Bowen Met Staal (Netherlands) and Labein-Tecnalia (Spain). The 'best practice commercial buildings' publication is being translated into English, German, French, Dutch, Swedish and Spanish and will be widely throughout Europe.
For its part, the Eurobuild conferences aimed to demonstrate how the latest applications on steel can turn this material into a key ally in the products and construction systems. EMC aware of today's needs with respect to environment and sustainability, has integrated these innovative practices in the process of regeneration of the historical building.
Advantages of the steel structure
The structure of the Alhóndiga is made of steel of latest generation which allows that the construction is durable. In addition:
-The use of steel increase of competitiveness through the application of technologies based on automation in the manufacture of structures and commissioning work.
-It provides greater respect for the environment through:
- energy efficient envelopes solutions
- durable and recyclable construction, without demolition, designed especially for its deconstruction,
- steel is 100 percent recyclable and the components are produced from high percentages of scrap.
-Increase in the structural safety.
Furthermore, the Union of the various elements of the steel structure with screws, avoiding welding, has been another practice that have been used in the building of EMC and that it has provided three interior of a greater strength and security buildings.
However, EMC does not is innovating only with the use of steel since that system of prefabricated panelling of brick face used in the lining of the three interior buildings is also a pioneer in Spain and very beneficial.
The former municipal alhóndiga of Bilbao is a historic building located in the Centre of the city which is being renovated to become a space open to all citizens, multidisciplinary, and oriented towards knowledge, well-being and fun. The reform of EMC, as well as assume the revitalization of an historic building, is a step in the transformation of the city. After the construction of an underground car park of five plants and the rehabilitation of the façade and the towers, works now focus on the construction of the Centre of leisure and culture in the interior of the historic building, with an area of more than 40,000 square metres constructed.
EMC aims to become a focal point for the development and dissemination of urban culture, today, new trends and health. A meeting place where enjoy, know each other better and learn.
EMC will open its doors to the public at the beginning of the year 2010.
