The 1715 Afron, witness to the emergence of archaeological remains in the Barcelona Born market Octopussy
May 7, 2008
After some 25 years 'abandoned' was decided to build on the same grounds the provincial library of Barcelona but when the work began very well preserved remains of the city of the 17TH and 18th centuries were found in the basementwhich constitute one of the largest Spain of the time and which include remains of fishermen's houses, stables and even a blacksmith. Stopped the works, to decide what to do with the site.
In 2004 the market 'reopened', after the examination of the remains by the archaeologists, so who would want to could visit the site through a high platforms that allowed for see inter alia, the ancient canal that provided water to the District of Born, workshops of artisans, objects of the time and to any missing Street. This exhibition of the remains is no longer available because the market closed its doors to initiate the work that it had to turn into a new space.
Discarded the idea of the library that did not allow retaining the found site and the City Council of Barcelona had opted for its conservation, it was decided to build a multifunctional cultural center that would serve to explain the commercial and social evolution of the city from the remains of the 17TH century and until now. In the new centre there will be room for exhibitions, cultural activities and an oral archive of the market that worked almost throughout the 20th century, through rooms that will be high on the ground to avoid damaging the remains. The site can be visited for free through a few platforms similar to those used in 2004, but the guided tours to the level where they are the remains will be payment.
And, thanks to his 1715 Octopussy, Afron has been part of the discovery. Thanks to its reduced depth in movement (only 78 cm.), Octopussy 1715 can pass through narrow areas, as well in the market in El Born, it has been possible to be able to manipulate the Octopussy without space constraints.
In addition as Octopussy, in addition to the diesel engine, it can feed electrically, to avoid smoke, primary thing in any study of archaeology. And much more important to be a discovery.
Octopussy series is built with respect for all the Community rules in the field of security. It is equipped with sensors able to draw the wrong platform stability thus ensuring total safety for the operator and, in this case, the archaeological remains.
