The Parliament approves 2014 like Year of the Biotechnology in Spain

The past day 26 December confirmed the statement with the publication of the General Budgets of the State of 2014. These Budgets establish that the commemoration of the Year of the Biotechnology will enjoy of the character of “exceptional public interest”. It treats , therefore, of a decisive impulse to a sector that is showing that it can exert a central paper in the Spanish economy, as they coincide the entities promoters. Likewise, the Budgets establish fiscal profits for the commemoration, with bonuses for individuals and companies that participate in the activities of the Year of the Biotechnology.

The statement of 2014 like Year of the Biotechnology is a cream initiative in the Spanish Federation of Biotecnólogos (Febiotec), with the support of Asebio (Spanish Association of Bioempresas); Sebiot (Spanish Society of Biotechnology), that in 2014 celebrates his 25 anniversary, and SEM (Spanish Society of Microbiology). In words of his promoters, the aim of the Year of the Biotechnology is “to follow promoting the Spanish biotechnology in all his facets, investigation and industrial, as well as improve his education and social communication. It treats , in summary, to put the biotechnology in the centre of the society.”

The proposal of the representatives of the sector biotecnológico was collected by the Popular Group in the Congress, that presented the proposition the past 8 May in front of the Commission of Health of the Congress with the unanimous support of the rest of parliamentary groups, urging to that 2014 was declared Year of the Biotechnology in Spain, standing out the work of the biotechnology like economic engine still in time of crisis. This work has remained now finally recognised with the definite approval of this event of exceptional public interest.

The Spanish biotechnology, that will be leading of the commemorations of 2014, has showed in the last years be a sector of singular fortress and big perspectives of growth. The last ten years have been of a spectacular development, according to data of Asebio, with an increase of the númere of companies of 359% and a growth of the facturación of más of 600%, keeping taxles of growth of two figures in spite of the hardness of the crisis, what it sitúto as one of the sectors estratégicos key for the recuperación económica. This exceptional dynamism has been recognised by the Ocde, that in a report of 2012 situates to Spain like the second country of the 34 countries members with greater number of companies of the sector biotecnológico. Of this form, the commemoration will suppose an espaldarazo definite for a sector that is allocated to exert a main paper in the future economic model based in the knowledge and the R&D.
