July 15, 2011

Over 150 producers of nuts of all Spain gathered on July 12 at the State Seminary in sector organized by Coag in Jumilla (Murcia) to discuss the future of this crop. Among the conclusions that were drawn, can be highlighted as follows:

-Although there is capacity to deal with part of global demand, especially from the point of view of the quality of our productions, it is absolutely essential to improve and increase it through a State restructuring plan of nuts for boot plantations and plantation of new varieties, with the aim of modernizing the productive structures and renew those varieties unadjusted to the demands of consumers.

-On the other hand, it is also essential to differentiate the quality of our productions. It has been thoroughly control the volume and quality of imports, as well as mixtures of product imported with State product through control of the traceability and labelling. In this sense, it is necessary to improve the inspection and the quality control in border and points of sale, particularly with regard to the origin on the label.

-Also, and within this framework of quality and differentiation of the dried fruit of the State against the production of third countries, figures for the protection of the quality of the Spanish product at a general level, or indications of quality of production areas must be in particular.

-After the decoupling of aid to the surface of nuts in 2012, Member States may continue complementing the aforementioned aid, as it has happened in the Spanish until now State with the corresponding national and regional aid, even if Community aid pass to lump sum. COAG claims to keep the State and regional aid linked to the surface which perceives the sector currently established and conditions contained in the agreement with the sector in 2004, after producing the decoupling of aid by 2012.
