Andalusia expected to achieve by 2010 a capacity of 687.970 tonnes of equivalent petroleum (tep) annual biodiesel production, so it would be as the region with greater capacity of the country, beating Valencia, which currently holds the post. Currently, the region has a total of 15 plants for biodiesel in different phases of operation, construction and development. Of these, seven plants are in operation and are located in the municipalities of Níjar and Cuevas del Almanzora in Almerí; Palos de la Frontera (Huelva); Linares (Jaén); San Roque (Cadiz); Sources in Seville and Andalucía (Seville). There is also another project already completed in the Jaén city of Andújar, which has a production capacity of 180,000 pet and which could be operational next year. On the other hand, Andalusia has other three projects under construction are located in Almería, Cordoba, and Huelva. Also, an extension of capacity of the already operational plant of Biooils in Huelva, which join 225,000 tons more is under construction.
The development of biodiesel plants planned in Andalusia with those found in operation, could provide 27 per cent of the fuel consumption automotive of the community by the year 2010, exceeding the targets set by European legislation on 21 points. In this sense, Andalusia has 81 operational biogasolineras what makes it the second autonomous community after Catalonia, in number of service stations that distribute biofuels (biodiesel and bioethanol) to consumers.
