October 27, 2009
The Department of agriculture, fisheries and food of the Valencian Community has developed a day for the improvement of the techniques of cultivation of the cherry tree on the mountain of Alicante. The initiative is part of the strategy of technology transfer to the sector carried out by the Generalitat valenciana. Organized by the Instituto Valenciano de agriculture research, this day was intended to disseminate new cultivation techniques that improve the quality of this fruit, as well as the introduction of the techniques associated with the zero project which obtained the field products adapted to the demands of consumers. During the event were made public the results of the studies on new varieties of cherries more precocious than the 'Burlat', of majority culture in the region of the Comtat, and larger. They were also unveiled new patterns studied, more tolerable to tired soil where the replanting of the same cultivation are made. Together, we investigate "more efficient" in the cultivation of these varieties of cherries, as well as reduce costs and environmental impact.
The Valencian Community allocates a surface area of approximately 2,700 hectares to this crop, where a production that exceeds the 4,200 tons of cherries is obtained.
