Portugal and Spain have 85% of the global distribution of stone pine

Day counted 182 representatives among producers, industrialists, associations of owners and researchers, which discussed issues of interest to the sector in Portugal and Spain and the balance of the campaign 2008 / 2009, particularly affected by the global financial and economic crisis.

During the day and following the conclusions of the meeting, was shown the need for a Strategic Plan for the development of the Sector of the pinion and the pineapple, from an optical public-private, constituting a point of reference for the development of the sector. This plan must be structured environment for the promotion of the culture of the pinion; advocacy, communication and marketing; research and experimental development; Organization, dynamics and interests of the sector; and transfer and dissemination of knowledge.
The lengthy debate which took place at the event, enriched by the exchange of experience between representatives of the sector in both countries, allowed to obtain the following conclusions:
- Is it shows increasing professionalization of the sector, as well as high investment by forest producers consisting of reforestation, forest management and harvest of pineapple, and research and development of new projects and initiatives.
- The sector of the pineapple and pinion, given its unique features in the European context, is an emerging sector which must be accompanied and revitalized from the public/private perspective.
- The application of standards of traceability is a good solution to ensure the quality of the pinion, avoiding adulteration of product and fostering a regulatory framework to minimize the problems of theft and tax evasion.
- It is necessary to guide the lines of research relating to the pine the following needs of knowledge: fertilization and nutrition, modeling selvícola and production, selection and genetic improvement, quality of the pineapple and pinion, and innovation in mechanization.
- Promote and disseminate the mechanized collection of pineapple as an essential element for making profitable use, minimizing the effect of the scarce resources of labour and its previous high, as well as a way to maximize the collection and reduce the period of harvestwhich ultimately prevents the theft of pineapples.
